Do you have personal development goals for 2023? The beginning of a new year can be unsettling. No doubt you’ve taken time out to enjoy the festive season. Spent time with family and friends, perhaps hit the beach, or travelled overseas. But the more enjoyable holidays are, the more difficult getting back to work can be. One way to get your head back into gear is to make a plan for the months ahead. One that sets out your goals for personal development so that you’ve got something to focus on and aim for. Start by thinking about what’s most important to you – what do you want your life to look like in 12 months’ time? Do you want to: Gain experience in a new sector? Achieve an academic qualification? Earn more money? Get your administration in order? Free up more time for personal enjoyment? Change your lifestyle? Work on your personal relationships? Give back or contribute to the community? Once you’ve identified your most important goals, make plans – in writing – to achieve each of them. Your plans need to be specific, measurable, relevant, and achievable. They should be broken down into manageable steps, with each step assigned a realistic deadline. Once your plans are in writing, keep them in a highly visible place. If your goal is to improve your lifestyle, maybe stick your plan to the door of your fridge. If your goal is to spend more time with family, remind yourself to work more efficiently by keeping your plan on your desktop. Talk about your goals and plans with close friends or family – in doing so, you’ll naturally become more accountable for your actions. Reward yourself Achieving goals requires discipline, so don’t beat yourself up if you occasionally go off track and miss a deadline. Just pick yourself up, refocus, and move on.
